Amir Sarfaraz, also known as Tambu, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside his home in the Islamapura area of Lahore on Sunday. Tambu was considered a prime suspect behind the murder of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore in 2013. Sarabjit, a resident of Punjab, was arrested by the Pakistani military on charges of espionage.
On Sunday, while standing outside his home in Islamapura, Lahore, Tambu was shot dead by two unknown gunmen
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Amir Sarfaraz was believed to be a close associate of Hafiz Saeed, the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba. Sarfaraz was an active member of LeT and had participated in several terrorist activities.
Randeep Hooda, who portrayed Sarabjit Singh in the 2016 film “Sarbjit,” reacted to Sarfaraz’s murder by saying, “Karma always comes back, even if it’s through unknown people.” Hooda also expressed his condolences, mentioning Dalbir Kaur, Sarabjit’s sister, in his post. He wrote, “I remember my sister Dalbir Kaur. Sending love to Poonam and Swapandeep. Sarabjit Singh has finally received some justice.”
It’s worth mentioning that Randeep Hooda had also attended Dalbir Kaur’s funeral in 2022. Dalbir Kaur passed away that year. Sarabjit Singh’s murder is considered a retaliation for the murder of Tambu. Following the murder, tension has escalated in Lahore, and the police have increased security in the area.
Who was Sarabjit Singh?
Sarabjit Singh was an Indian farmer residing near the India-Pakistan border in Bhatinda, Punjab. On August 30, 1990, he accidentally crossed the Pakistan border and was arrested by Pakistani authorities. He was accused of involvement in several bomb blasts in Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad. In 1999, Pakistani courts found him guilty of these bombings and sentenced him to death. However, Sarabjit Singh and his family always maintained that the allegations were baseless. They claimed that Sarabjit was mistakenly apprehended by the Pakistani military and coerced into confessing to crimes he did not commit. This case garnered international attention, and the Indian government pressured Pakistan for Sarabjit Singh’s release and safety. After years of diplomatic efforts and international pressure, the Pakistani government granted Sarabjit Singh relief from the death penalty. However, in 2013, he was attacked by Amir Sarfaraz in Kot Lakhpat Jail, resulting in his death.
The murder of Sarabjit Singh and Amir Sarfaraz’s subsequent killing are seen as interconnected events in the ongoing saga between India and Pakistan, characterized by espionage accusations, retaliatory actions, and diplomatic tensions.
