BJP MP Ashok Chavan Asserts No Changes to Constitution, Echoing PM Modi’s Stand

In a recent statement, BJP Member of Parliament Ashok Chavan emphasized the unwavering stance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the Indian Constitution, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that there will be no alterations to the nation’s foundational document.

Chavan, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, conveyed this message during interactions with the media in his hometown of Nanded, Maharashtra, ahead of polling scheduled for Friday across eight Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Highlighting the significance of PM Modi’s declaration

Chavan remarked, “Our party’s top leader and Prime Minister Modi has clearly communicated that there will not be any changes in the Constitution. The PM’s comment is like a policy matter for us,” as reported by news agency PTI.

He underscored the collective importance placed on the stance of the BJP’s leadership over individual opinions regarding potential amendments to the Constitution. Chavan emphasized, “What my party’s top leader (PM) says about it (Constitution) is more important to us (than an individual’s comments on the issue).”

Chavan also referenced instances where BJP members who advocated for changes to the Constitution faced repercussions within the party. Notably, he cited the case of Anantkumar Hegde, a BJP Lok Sabha member from Uttara Kannada, who made controversial remarks regarding the Constitution in March and was subsequently denied a BJP ticket in Karnataka.

In March, Hegde had asserted that the BJP would require a two-thirds majority in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, as well as control in over 20 states, to address what he perceived as distortions and unnecessary additions to the Constitution introduced by the Congress party.

Chavan reiterated the party’s adherence to PM Modi’s stance, stating

“Those who spoke about bringing changes in the country’s Constitution did not get a ticket from the BJP to contest Lok Sabha elections. I think it happened in Karnataka…what my party’s top leader says about it is more important to us.”

Overall, Chavan’s remarks underscore the BJP’s firm commitment to upholding the integrity of the Constitution and the importance of aligning with the directives of its leadership, particularly that of Prime Minister Modi. As India navigates through its democratic processes, such statements reaffirm the BJP’s stance on constitutional matters and its dedication to preserving the foundational principles of the nation.
