In Hindu scriptures, numerous activities are discouraged after sunset, and it is believed that engaging in these activities post-sunset can lead to adverse consequences. Many of these practices find their roots in ancient mythologies and astrological teachings.
While some may view these traditions as superstitions, astrologer and pundit Hitesh Soni Poddar from Bhopal sheds light on certain practices related to warding off the evil eye, particularly concerning children. According to Poddar, the concept of the evil eye is not just a superstition; it holds significance in energy and thought processes, affecting an individual’s overall well-being.
Avoid Bathing After Sunset
According to astrological principles, taking a bath after sunset is discouraged. It is believed that this practice can displease the goddess Lakshmi. Additionally, applying a tilak (a religious mark) after an evening bath is considered inauspicious. From a scientific perspective, bathing during the night may increase vulnerability to cold-related illnesses.
Astrological Remedies
To counter the effects of the evil eye, certain astrological remedies are suggested. For instance, applying sindoor (vermilion) from Lord Hanuman’s temple on a child’s forehead on Saturdays is believed to mitigate the impact of negative energy.
Using Tamarind for Eye Ailments
When a child accidentally gets something in their eye, taking three small pieces of tamarind, burning them on one side, and then gently rotating those pieces seven times over the affected child’s forehead can reportedly improve eyesight.
Preventing Distractions During Meals
If a child is having trouble focusing on meals, placing a leaf or petal from a tree, along with a sprinkle of rose water or rose petals, on their plate might help improve their concentration and appetite.
Warding Off Evil Eye with Sacred Fire
Burning red chili, ajwain (carom seeds), and yellow mustard in a small earthen pot, and then using the smoke to bless the child, is believed to ward off the evil eye. This practice is said to be effective in removing negative energies. While these practices might be perceived differently in modern times, they offer insights into the cultural and spiritual heritage of ancient beliefs. The essence lies not just in the rituals but also in the intent behind preserving the positive energies that surround us.
