Destination Temples: A Rising Trend in Spiritual Weddings

After the resounding success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ved In India’ campaign, many couples are now opting for destination weddings within the country. Particularly, a growing number of individuals are choosing to tie the knot not at tourist destinations but at well-known temples. This emerging trend of ‘Destination Temple Weddings’ is highlighted in a recent report.

Changing Tides of Wedding Preferences

Over time, the landscape of destination weddings has evolved. While historical palaces, beachfronts, and mountain locales were once the preferred venues, the culture of destination temple weddings is gaining popularity among the youth. According to Vijaysinh Chavda, General Manager of the Shri Somnath Trust in Gujarat, “In recent times, there has been an increased interest in spiritual destination weddings. To cater to this demand, we have made all the necessary arrangements for weddings associated with the Shri Somnath Temple through the trust.”

Temples Stepping up as Wedding Venues

Notably, the Uttarakhand government has recently decided to prepare several temples in the state for destination weddings. Simultaneously, a trend has emerged where young couples are choosing to solemnize their marriages at various spiritual places. To explore this growing trend, we engaged in discussions with representatives from significant temples and wedding experts.

Pilgrimage Temples Gaining Favor

Vijaysinh Chavda of the Shri Somnath Trust emphasizes, “People are now actively searching for new places for spiritual destination weddings. We, through the Shri Somnath Trust, offer all the necessary facilities for weddings in Somnath.”

Ajendra Ajay, Chairman of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, adds, “It is true that there is a growing interest in getting married at historical and mythological places. Witnessing this trend, we had recently discussed preparing the Ukhimath temple for destination weddings, and we are already receiving bookings for weddings here. Additionally, many people are showing interest in getting married at the Triyuginarayan Temple.”

Beyond Temples: Ashrams and Spiritual Retreats

It’s not only the temples but also ashrams that are becoming popular choices for couples. In Rishikesh, the Parmarth Niketan Ashram is witnessing families from the Delhi NCR region organizing wedding ceremonies.

Natural Beauty and Facilities

India boasts several temples situated amidst breathtaking natural landscapes. Whether it’s the Triyuginarayan Temple nestled between mountains or the Somnath Temple overlooking the sea, temples are enhancing their facilities to accommodate the rising demand for destination weddings. According to Vijaysinh Chavda, “Our Sagardarshan Guest House, which faces the sea and is conducive to destination weddings, is becoming quite popular.”

In Uttarakhand, there is a focus on developing facilities at the Ukhimath Math for destination weddings. The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee is exploring possibilities at various temples, including Badrinath and Kedarnath, to make them suitable for such events.

Historical and Mythological Significance

Apart from their historical and mythological significance, these temples are now adapting to the changing preferences of couples. The Ukhimath Math, home to the Omkareshwar Temple, is undergoing phased development to offer better facilities for destination weddings. The Triyuginarayan Temple is already witnessing bookings for weddings.

Spiritual Resurgence and Pandemic Influences

Atul Agrawal points out, “The significant reason behind this trend is the increased faith people have developed, especially among the youth. After the pandemic, there has been a surge in spiritual sentiments. People are finding solace and are inclined towards getting married in a divine setting, seeking blessings for their new journey.”
