In the clash between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2024 tournament, held at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 31, DC emerged victorious. However, the captain of Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant, faced penalties from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) due to a violation of the IPL code of conduct.
Pant was penalized for a slow over-rate during the match against CSK. As Delhi’s team was lagging behind by three overs at a certain point in the game, Pant was fined ₹12 lakhs. Consequently, in the final two overs of the match, DC was required to keep five fielders within a 30-yard circle.
This is the first instance of Rishabh Pant facing penalties for a slow over-rate in IPL 2024, resulting in a fine of ₹12 lakhs. However, if such an infraction recurs, the penalty amount will double to ₹24 lakhs. Additionally, all other players will face a fine of ₹6 lakhs or 25% of their match fee. For a third offense, the captain will face a penalty of ₹30 lakhs and a potential ban for one match, while other players will be fined ₹12 lakhs or 50% of their match fee.
It is imperative for captains to be mindful of the regulations moving forward, as adherence to the rules is essential to avoid further penalties and maintain the spirit of fair play in the IPL.
