Virasat Express, also known as the Kalka Mail, holds the title of being the oldest train in the Indian Railways. It connects Howrah in Kolkata to Kalka in Haryana. The journey of Kalka Mail began in 1866, running between Kolkata and Delhi. Later, in 1891, its route was extended from Delhi to Kalka. During the British era, this train gained immense popularity and was considered the most prestigious train of its time.
Origin of Kalka Mail
Kalka Mail was specifically commissioned for the British. One of the reasons behind its creation was the scorching heat of Kolkata, which the British found unbearable. To escape the heat, they designated Shimla as their summer capital. To travel from Kolkata to Shimla, the British needed a special train, and thus, the Kalka Mail was born.
Evolution of the Name
Due to its ancient legacy, the train has undergone several name changes over time. Initially named the East India Railway Mail, it was later renamed Kalka Mail. However, in recent years, the train has been rebranded as the Virasat Express.
Connection with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose
There’s a special connection between Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and this train. Many people are unaware that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose disappeared while boarding this train 80 years ago. According to reports, on January 18, 1941, Netaji, after evading the British, boarded this train from Gomo Junction in Dhanbad district.
Renaming in Honor of Netaji
In 2021, on the occasion of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s 125th birth anniversary, the train’s name was changed. Instead of Howrah-Kalka Mail, it is now known as Virasat Express, paying homage to the legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
