On Tuesday, the Samajwadi Party made the decision to once again send Jaya Bachchan to the Rajya Sabha. Besides Jaya Bachchan, the party revealed two more candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections. According to PTI-Bhasha, SP’s national spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary stated that the party expressed confidence in Jaya Bachchan and nominated former IAS officer Alok Ranjan (IAS Alok Ranjan) and ex-MP Ramjilal Suman for the Rajya Sabha. All three candidates are set to file their nominations on Tuesday. Currently, SP has three members in the Rajya Sabha—Ram Gopal Yadav, Javed Ali Khan, and Jaya Bachchan.

Jaya Bachchan: A Continuous Rajya Sabha Member Since 2004

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan’s wife, veteran actress Jaya Bachchan, has been a Rajya Sabha member since 2004. The Samajwadi Party has consistently nominated her to represent the party in the upper house of the Parliament. This time around, she has once again been given the ticket to contest.

Other Candidates in the Fray

Ramjilal Suman, a former MP and a close associate of the late SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, is among the three candidates. Alok Ranjan, a former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh during Akhilesh Yadav’s government, has also been fielded by the party. Known for his excellent administrative skills, Alok Ranjan has a strong reputation in the IAS lobby.

Impact of Ralod Quota Shift to NDA

With Jyant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leaving the SP alliance to join the NDA, the dynamics have changed. The RLD’s eight votes from the Ralod quota have shifted to the BJP-led coalition. However, SP leader Rajendra Chaudhary suggests that this change won’t have a significant impact on the overall outcome. The SP, with the support of its current MLAs, is confident in sending all three candidates to the Rajya Sabha.

How the Mathematics of Rajya Sabha Election Works

To send any candidate to the Rajya Sabha, 37 first preference votes are required. The SP, currently a part of the opposition coalition, has 108 of its own MLAs and support from 2 Congress MLAs. Based on the mathematics of first preference votes, the SP can comfortably secure the victory of all three candidates in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for February 27th.

In summary, with Jaya Bachchan’s candidacy and the strategic selection of Alok Ranjan and Ramjilal Suman, the Samajwadi Party aims to maintain its presence and influence in the Rajya Sabha. The upcoming elections will not only decide the fate of these candidates but also contribute to the broader political landscape in Uttar Pradesh.
