Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader in Indian politics, has once again reiterated the need for a caste-based census, suggesting a groundbreaking step of breaking the 50% reservation limit. In a recent statement, he emphasized the importance of caste enumeration and economic mapping to redefine the reservation system, ensuring accurate representation and entitlements for all sections of society. The proposed move aims to provide not only targeted policies for the underprivileged but also uplift them through education, income, and healthcare initiatives.
Rahul Gandhi’s Stance on Caste Census
Rahul Gandhi has been consistently pushing for a caste-based census, considering it essential for understanding the social fabric of the country. His party has committed to conducting the caste census if they come to power at the central level, intending to shed light on the demographic distribution of various communities, including the economically weaker sections.
The Congress leader took to social media to share his thoughts, stating, “Have we ever thought about who the poor are, how many they are, and in what conditions they live? Isn’t it essential to count them? The caste census in Bihar revealed that 88% of the population in the economically weaker category belongs to Dalits, Adivasis, backward classes, and minority communities. The figures from Bihar provide a glimpse of the real picture of the country, and we have no idea about the living conditions of the poor.”
Rahul Gandhi’s Proposal: Breaking the 50% Reservation Barrier
In a bold move, Rahul Gandhi proposed breaking the 50% reservation barrier, advocating for a comprehensive review of the existing reservation system. He emphasized the need for a caste census and economic mapping to serve as the foundation for dismantling the current reservation limit. According to him, this step would act as an X-ray for the country, ensuring fair representation, rights, and equitable distribution.
“This move will not only enable the formulation of accurate policies and programs for the poor but will also connect them to the mainstream of development by overcoming the struggles of education, income, and healthcare,” Gandhi asserted in his statement.
India Unites for Justice Yatra
Rahul Gandhi is currently on the “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,” which will conclude in Maharashtra on March 17. Similar to his previous journeys, this one focuses on addressing issues such as inflation and unemployment. However, during this campaign, he has prominently highlighted the need for a caste census and has brought forward the concerns of the economically backward, Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis.
Rahul Gandhi’s call for a caste-based census and breaking the 50% reservation barrier has sparked discussions and debates across the political spectrum. As the nation awaits the outcome of these proposed changes, the Congress leader remains steadfast in his commitment to bringing about a more inclusive and just society through data-driven policies and equitable representation.
