In a tragic incident, some individuals were attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea aboard rubber boats. Unfortunately, before the rescue team could reach them, many had succumbed to starvation.
The Mediterranean Sea, with miles of water in every direction, proved to be a perilous journey for those hoping to find a better life by crossing from Africa. Unfortunately, instead of reaching Europe, their journey ended in tragedy due to starvation.
Among the deceased were not just one or two individuals, but at least 60 passengers. However, 25 individuals onboard were saved. The rescue organization “SOS Mediterranean” managed to rescue those in distress upon receiving distress signals.
Rescue Operation and Tragic Outcome
When the Ocean Viking ship of SOS Mediterranean reached the scene, the situation was grim. Many individuals were severely ill, and some had already perished.
According to a report by BBC, the group aboard the rubber boats had departed from the northern coast of Libya on Friday. However, their journey went awry after three days, leading to the boats drifting in the sea.
Unfavorable weather conditions, lack of food and water, and starvation led to the demise of the passengers. Some women and children were among the victims. The rescue team reported that the individuals died due to hunger and thirst rather than drowning.
Recovery Efforts
The Ocean Viking ship, operated by SOS Mediterranean, spotted a group of rubber boats. Upon closer inspection, they found people aboard, prompting immediate rescue efforts. The Italian Coast Guard was notified, and attempts were made to save those in distress.
Out of approximately 60 individuals, sadly, many had already passed away. Those who were rescued were in critical condition and received medical treatment.
The tragic incident in the Mediterranean Sea highlights the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants seeking refuge in Europe. Despite efforts by rescue organizations like SOS Mediterranean, many lives continue to be lost due to the harsh conditions of the sea and the desperation of those attempting the journey.
