The UGC NET examination is set to undergo significant changes, with two major amendments being introduced this year. The application process for the June session is expected to commence from Saturday. This information has been announced by the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), M. Jagadesh Kumar.
Key Changes in Eligibility Criteria for UGC NET
According to the UGC Chairman, candidates eligible for the UGC NET June 2024 session will now include those in their final semester or year of a 4-year Bachelor’s degree program. Importantly, candidates will now have the flexibility to pursue a Ph.D. in their preferred subject, regardless of their undergraduate field of study. Kumar stated, “Students pursuing a 4-year Bachelor’s degree program can now pursue a Ph.D. in any subject, irrespective of the subject they received their 4-year Bachelor’s degree in.”
Previous Eligibility Criteria
Previously, it was mandatory for candidates appearing for the UGC NET to hold a Master’s degree. Candidates were only allowed to pursue a Ph.D. in the same subject in which they had obtained their 2-year postgraduate degree. However, with the recent amendments to the regulations, students will be able to save time as they will no longer require a Master’s degree.
Announcement Regarding Application Process by UGC
M. Jagadesh Kumar also made a significant announcement regarding the application process. He revealed that the National Testing Agency (NTA) will initiate the application process for UGC NET June 2024 from April 20. Interested and eligible candidates will be able to apply by visiting ugcnet.nta.ac.in. Additionally, candidates can visit the new NTA website, https://exams.nta.ac.in/, for updates related to the examination.
These updates regarding the UGC NET 2024 examination signify a shift towards greater flexibility and inclusivity in eligibility criteria, allowing more candidates to pursue higher education opportunities in their preferred fields.
