In a significant move aimed at providing respite to students, the West Bengal School Education Department has announced an early summer vacation for government and government-aided schools starting from April 22, 2024. This decision comes amidst changing weather conditions and the onset of intense heatwaves, signaling the state government’s commitment to the well-being of students.
Previously, summer vacations were scheduled from May 6 to June 2. However, considering factors such as the ongoing elections and the prevailing heatwave conditions, the dates have been revised, and the holidays have been declared earlier than planned.
The announcement extends not only to students but also to teachers and non-teaching staff. However, it’s worth noting that election officials involved in the Lok Sabha elections will continue to fulfill their duties despite the holiday period.
The Secretary of School Education has issued notices to the chairpersons of primary and secondary education boards
highlighting the current situation of intense heat and administrative decisions to initiate summer vacations earlier than scheduled in schools falling within administrative regions. Schools in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts will be exempt from the holiday announcement, with academic activities continuing until further notice.
In a related development, the Odisha government has declared a three-day holiday for all schools starting from April 18 due to the anticipated rise in temperatures and the likelihood of heatwaves. The decision, aimed at safeguarding students’ health and well-being, comes following forecasts predicting a significant increase in temperatures, with some areas expected to surpass 45 degrees Celsius between April 18 and 20.
During this period, parents are advised to ensure that children remain indoors and adhere strictly to all school regulations. The announcements reflect a proactive approach by state governments in prioritizing the safety and welfare of students amid challenging weather conditions and the ongoing electoral process.
